The owner of a 2021 Land Cruiser 79 series with the 1VD-FTV recently approached us. He already had an aftermarket plug’n’play control unit installed and wanted a new full exhaust fitted and questioned whether the aftermarket control unit was able to be adjusted to suit the exhaust and potentially gain some extra power. We were unable to access the software to make the adjustments after conducting some research.
It was after this find decided to remove the plug’n’play system and to re-flash the ECU with our custom tune to suit the vehicle. We will in this post show you how different the result from a Plug’n’Play system is compared to an Alt Tune remap.
We decided to complete a direct comparison with the factory performance, to a piggyback system, and then to our tuning work.
First, we sorted out the exhaust, then we could begin our test once the Land Cruiser was loaded onto the dyno. We completed 3 tests, one for the in-factory tune, another one with the Plug’n’Play and then finally with our own tune. We used the OBD2 connector to the dyno to monitor the boost reading the ECU was seeing, of course we also keep an eye on air fuel ratios and many other parameters.
Comparing the results was interesting. The Plug’n’Play ECU produced an increase in power over the factory but only followed the same pattern as the factory. The interesting part was that the Plug’n’Play system manipulated and flatlined the boost reading to keep it within factory limitations. However, the power delivery shows that this results in inconsistent boost control. When looking at our flashed tune the boost is smooth and consistent and power delivery has not only increased but also had a large increase in torque in the lower rev range, thus greatly improving the drivability.
We have solutions for emission systems such as disabling the Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) (Adblue) and associated DTC fault codes.
We have been tuning the Landcruiser’s 4.5L V8 turbo diesel engines for years, and understand how they work as well as the limitation on factory hardware.
Increased power and torque result in safer over taking and easier open road driving. Throttle response is also increased.
